Broken Tusk to close, reopen as tea bar

St. Petersburg – For a year-and-a-half, LGBTs, drag queens and their allies have partied, raised money and shared drinks at The Broken Tusk on 28th Street North. But come May 1, they’ll be sharing drinks of the non-alcoholic kind.

The owners announced the change on its Facebook page, saying that The Broken Tusk will sling its last alcoholic beverage on April 27 before reopening as Mad Hatters Ethnobotanical Tea Bar on May 1.

“We want to thank everyone for all the support and love,” the statement reads. “It has been a truly fun journey and now we feel like it is time to move forward with something new.”

Owners Judah and Levi Love say that they no longer drink alcohol and want to promote a healthier lifestyle through their newest business venture.

The new business—within the same structure that houses the Broken Tusk at 4685 28th St. N.—will sell kava, kratom and exotic teas that promote relaxation and overall well being. The pair say they are also looking into juicing and organic foods.

“This is something we feel very passionate about and we are really excited to be able to educate others on how plants can be beneficial for everything from depression to insomnia to social anxiety, hypertension, high blood pressure and more,” the owners said.

The soft opening on May 1 will give patrons a sneak peak at what the Mad Hatter Tea Bar will offer, but until then the Broken Tusk plans to have a farewell party as management clears out its stockrooms now through April 27.
