Notre Dame tennis player comes out

South Bend, Ind. – Notre Dame tennis player Matt Dooley struggled with accepting he is gay.

The 22-year-old senior disclosed he is gay the first week of March, saying he hopes the revelation will help others struggling with their sexuality. Dooley says he has been overwhelmed by the positive response he has received for the article he wrote for Outsports.com.

He’s working with university’s student welfare and development office to produce a video involving all teams at Notre Dame that will promote the You Can Play initiative, which fights sexual orientation discrimination. Members of PrismND, the first official organization dedicated to serving the gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning students on campus, were pleased to see Dooley come out.

Dooley says he wants people struggling with their identities to know they will be accepted.
