Supreme Court will issue marriage equality decisions June 26

Still nothing from the Supreme Court on marriage equality, but the Chief Justice has announced that the final decision day will be tomorrow (Wednesday, June 26) at 10 a.m.

At issue are the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal ban on same sex marriage, and Proposition 8, California’s ban on same sex marriage.

The court issued three decisions today relating to land use/permitting, adoption rights and the Voting Rights Act.

There are three cases remaining. SCOTUSblog has a summary of all pending cases, including Hollingsworth v. Perry (Prop 8) and United States v. Windsor (DOMA).

When asked whether which justice writes the decision will be an indicator of how the decision has gone, one of the attorneys who writes for SCOTUSblog replied, “Some folks think that if the Chief is writing Perry, it is more likely that the appeal will be dismissed on standing grounds. The thinking is that it is less likely that he’d be writing to strike down Prop 8 on the merits (and that there is no majority to uphold it).”
