Tavares approves domestic partner registry

In a 4-1 vote, the Tavares City Council approved a domestic partner registry on Feb. 6, making it Lake County’s first city to offer same-sex couples some legal rights. Councilman Bob Grenier was the only “no” vote.

About 100 people showed up wearing red shirt to show their support of the registry, which would cover hospital and jail visitation, medical decisions and funeral decisions. The vote is a victory for equality, according to Equality Florida, and comes just two weeks after the much larger Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners voted to reject a registry in that county.
