Wisconsin elects Tammy Baldwin, first openly gay Senator

Tammy Baldwin has become the first openly gay member of the U.S. Senate.

Wisconsin voters chose Baldwin, 50, over Republican Tommy Thompson.


The election is reported to be the state’s most expensive ever, with candidates raising up to $65 million dollars.

Baldwin is said to be a strong supporter of LGBT equality, women’s rights and healthcare reform. Baldwin is a seven-term congresswoman from Madison.
