Fourteen Florida teams battle for World Series titles

A total of 14 teams from throughout the State of Florida traveled to Minneapolis this week to participate in the annual North American Gay Amateur Athletic Association World Series Aug. 13-18.

Of those 14, five are from Fort Lauderdale, five are from Orlando and four are from Tampa Bay.

Among the 11 teams competing in the A-Division are The Fort Lauderdale Noize and the Orlando Force.

Only one Florida team, the South Florida Metz, is competing in the B-Division, which totals 35 teams.

Florida is best represented, by numbers, in the C-Division, consisting of 53 teams, the Fort Lauderdale teams Alibi Angels and Mayem are joined by the Orlando Royalty, Orlando Fusion, the Tampa Crocs and the Tampa Venom.

And in the crowded 48-team D-Division, the Tampa VooDoo, Tampa Eagles, Orlando Sliders, Orlando Myoptics and Fort Lauderdale Renegades are competing for the trophy.

The annual tournament opened on Monday, Aug. 13, with an opening ceremony featuring MIss Richfield 1981. The performer, which has been featured on Atlantis Cruises, at events in Provincetown, Mass., and in Orbitz commercials, presented her cabaret-style show to a packed house. Tournament pool play began the following morning at fields throughout the area.

The tournament closes on Saturday, Aug. 18, with the championship game and a closing block party at The Depot.
