About two dozen Russian activists calling for equal rights for gays have held a short unauthorized march down a central Moscow boulevard.
The demonstrators dispersed when they saw police reinforcements approaching. Police often take swift and harsh measures to break up unsanctioned demonstrations, but there were no detentions seen at the Sunday event.
Moscow authorities for years have denied gay rights groups’ applications to hold rallies, saying such events could spark violence. Although homosexuality was decriminalized in post-Soviet Russia, antipathy toward gays remains high. Some previous rally attempts were attacked by opponents of gay rights.
