Monday Ripples: Harry Potter Saves the World!

“No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be.” — Isaac Asimov

Somewhere along the line in my family’s history we started a tradition where we write down what we’re thankful for and read it out loud. Often a moving moment, the practice helped us to reflect on what we have, and be thankful for it.

As this Thanksgiving rolls around, I hope you take such a moment or moments. Be thankful too for the ability you have to help others, and daydream about the things you could accomplish to that end in the coming year. The possibility is in your hands to make your Thanksgiving 2011 reflections even richer.

Man, my mouth is literally watering for some turkey just thinking about that day!

Wrap Yourself in Love
Wanzie.com Quilt Fundraiser
I visited San Francisco while I was in college and one of the many things that had an impact on me was stopping by The NAMES Project Foundation headquarters. I remember the space as being somewhat industrial looking. There was a little shop where I bought a sweatshirt which I wore proudly, somewhat defiantly, for many years. The thing that I won’t ever forget about that brief visit is the energy that was in that space, a palpable energy much like a holy place, like love giving your heart a hug. My friend, Darin, had to walk out before I was done looking, he was that moved.

The Center Orlando is bringing the AIDS Quilt to town for World AIDS Day on December 1st. In order to bring eighty panels, they will need your help to cover the cost associated with transporting, set-up, etc. Happily, local rabble-rouser Michael Wanzie is rallying the troops through his local website. Click on the link above and make a donation. Just $10 will make a difference.

Dumbledore’s Army Wants YOU!
The Harry Potter Alliance
I’ve been doing a lot of eye-rolling lately. More than usual, I should clarify. One of my jobs is at Universal Resort where Harry Potter lives as of this year. Since the movie was just released, there has been an influx of people dressed as Potter characters, or at least denizens of Potterville. While the popularity of the books and movies is beyond me, I was delighted to hear about this group which is joining muggles all over the world to do some good with their magic. Maybe fiction will meet reality and Harry Potter will save the world. I’ll stop rolling my eyes, if so.

Oprah’s Big Give Keeps Giving
Give Back Foundation
For the most part, I avoid reality television. Sure I’ve been sucked into it a few times – the second season of Read World with Pedro Zamora, Real World: Brooklyn because it had a couple of hotties, and I used to really like Amazing Race. My feeling about reality television overall is: I know people act appallingly, I don’t need to watch it on television to remember. Oprah’s Big Give on the other hand, had me from the concept to the very last episode. I was extremely disappointed to hear Oprah wouldn’t be following it with a series. This site is created by the winner of that show, Stephen Palleta. Give Back gives you a remarkable tool for raising money for your charity or giving to a worthy organization.
