Gay candidate faces homophobic battle

Anti-gay forces are stepping up their game as they try to keep openly gay candidate and city-commissioner Craig Lowe from getting elected as Gainesville’s mayor. Lowe will face off against Don March in an April 13 runoff election.

As that date approaches, Lowe is facing increasingly anti-gay attack from his opponents as they step out from behind anonymous bigoted fliers and mailers.

Dove Outreach Church is under investigation after it posted a sign in front of the church that reads, “No Homo Mayor.” A top church official later confirmed that the church had erected the sign. Pastor Wayne Sapp has been posting anti-gay videos online, attacking Lowe by calling him a “fag” and saying Gainesville shouldn’t be turned into “Homoville.”

Lowe had no comment on the negative campaigning surrounding him, but told the Gainesville Sun, “I feel great. I’m ready to move forward.”
