It's Fashionable to Feed Chickens

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” –Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Saving the planet comes naturally for Dechoes Resale, after all it’s inherent in what they do. They take gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, and knick-knacks of “undeniable quality and exclusive style” and resell them. You may be tired of that Juicy Couture t-shirt, but there’s someone out there who will appreciate it; with the help of the fine folks at Dechoes, your clothing finds a new home in a loving closet, instead of a putrid landfill. Remember: while recycling is heavenly, you earn your wings by reusing!

Another thing I like about Dechoes is that it offers a feeling of community and one of the ways it does this is through a monthly gathering they call Wine Not Wednesdays. These events are held at one of their three Orlando locations and include free wine and “Dec-hoes Alcoholic Punch,” nosh, entertainment, and of course you have the opportunity to shop. In February, they stepped up the proceedings a notch or two by having a silent auction to benefit Haiti relief. This month’s edition will be at the College Park location on March 3 at 6:00 PM and features live music by Ricky Diamond, Whitney Hogan, and Jamesson Beane.

Dechoes also encourages customers to be green through its Dechoholics card. This is a frequent shopper’s card on which you earn a point for every $10 you spend in merchandise, once you collect 10 points, you’ll receive 15% off an entire purchase. Here’s where their “Green Policy” comes in: If you refuse a bag, you’ll receive an extra point! If you think about it one way, you get $10 for not using a bag, which beats Target’s 5 cents discount by a long shot.

So I’m sure by now you’re as in love with Dechoes as I am, but it gets better. Now Scottie Saves the World is partnering with Dechoes to benefit Heifer International. My other half, Brendan O’Connor, has created whimsical chicken jars that are placed at the registers of each Dechoes location. Now through the end of April, Dechoes shoppers can drop their spare change – or more – into the chicken’s mouth and help people worlds away. It’s particularly exciting to carry this effort through April as that is Heifer’s Pass on the Gift Month.

Here’s a list of Dechoes locations, so you can visit a chicken:
